- New_England_English abstract "New England English collectively refers to the dialects of American English originating in the New England area. Natives of much of Connecticut, western Vermont, and western Massachusetts, as well as some members of the current younger generation in other parts of New England, tend to speak with an accent that is closer to General American; however, the other New England dialects exhibit unique characteristics, and research by William Labov suggests that these dialects as a whole are growing more distinct and diverse from those elsewhere in the United States. The four major New England dialects are broadly defined as follows:The northeastern dialect is characterized by non-rhoticity and the cot–caught merger. It centers on Boston, Massachusetts, extending into New Hampshire, eastern Vermont, and coastal Maine. The southeastern dialect is characterized by non-rhoticity and a lack of the cot–caught merger. It centers on Providence, Rhode Island and the Narragansett Bay, extending into southeasternmost Connecticut and western Bristol County, Massachusetts. The northwestern dialect is characterized by rhoticity and the cot–caught merger. It centers on metropolitan and western Vermont and some of eastern New York State. The southwestern dialect is characterized by rhoticity and a lack of the cot–caught merger. It centers on both Hartford in northwestern Connecticut as well as Springfield in southwestern Massachusetts.↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ 4.0 4.1 4.2 4.3 4.4 4.5 4.6 4.7".
