Through her, the family acquired the famous 'Harcourt emeralds'. In the Second World War, he served in the Auxiliary Air Force, before returning to his career in the City of London, as a director of the family bank.Ashburton and his family lived in Hampshire, where he was active in public life, serving as a member of Hampshire County Council and later as Lord Lieutenant of the county.He was appointed a Knight of the Garter in 1969. Since his death, his Garter banner has been on display at Winchester Cathedral.He died in 1991, leaving two sons. The title passed to his elder son, John.".
