He served in the provincial cabinet as Attorney General and as Minister of Regional Economic Development. Smith was a member of the board of directors for the Royal British Columbia Museum. He ran for the leadership of the provincial Social Credit party in 1986.In 1990, Smith was forced to resign as attorney general after taped phone conversations were leaked to the press.".
