He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge and trained in the law at Grays Inn. He was knighted by the Earl of Leicester in 1571.He was a Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Cambridgeshire 1584, 1586 and 1601.He was appointed a Justice of the Peace (JP) for Cambridgeshire in 1579, Hertfordshire in 1582 and Essex in 1586. He was appointed Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire for 1572–73 and 1601-2 and High Sheriff of Hertfordshire for 1588–89.He married twice: firstly Anne, the daughter of Sir Arthur Darcy of Huntingdonshire, with whom he had a son and two daughters and secondly Margaret, the daughter and coheiress of John Brocket of Brocket Hall, Hertfordshire, with whom he had another son. He was succeeded by his son John.".
