He was in private practice in Frankfort, Kentucky from 1905 to 1922. He was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1912 to 1914. He was a collector of internal revenue for the State of Kentucky from 1917 to 1922, returning to private practice in Louisville, Kentucky from 1922 to 1935. On June 14, 1935, Hamilton was nominated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to a seat on the United States District Court for the Western District of Kentucky vacated by Charles I. Dawson. Hamilton was confirmed by the United States Senate on June 18, 1935, and received his commission on June 20, 1935. On February 25, 1938, Roosevelt nominated Hamilton for elevation to a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit vacated by Charles Harwood Moorman. Hamilton was confirmed by the United States Senate on March 1, 1938, and received his commission on March 4, 1938. Hamilton served in that capacity until his death, in 1945.".
