He is a recipient of the Harrie Massey Medal for Australian physics and of the Centenary Medal for his contribution to quantum theory. He is best known for the Pegg-Barnett phase formalism that provides a quantum mechanical description of the phase of light (Phys. Rev. A vol.39, 1665-1675 (1989)), for the invention of the DEPT sequence for nuclear magnetic resonance (J. Chem. Phys. vol.77, 2745-2752 (1982)) and for the invention of the quantum scissors device (Phys. Rev. Lett. vol.81, 1604-1606 (1998)).".
