He was selected in the 2nd round by the San Diego Padres and signed for a bonus of $300,000. In preparation for the jump to Double-A, in the off-season, Chalk bulked up to 190 lbs. from his weight last season of 180 lbs.On December 9, 2010, Chalk was claimed by the Pittsburgh Pirates from the San Diego Padres in the AAA portion of the Rule 5 draft. On March 27, 2012, Chalk was released by the Pittsburgh Pirates.".
