He was employed as a clerk in a mercantile establishment in Middletown, New York from 1824 to 1831. He moved to Goshen, New York, and engaged in banking. He served as treasurer of Orange County 1851-1854.Murray was elected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress and reelected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1855 – March 3, 1859). He resumed banking in Goshen, New York. He served as delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1860. Murray also served as one of the directors of the Erie Railroad. As a staunch abolitionist, Murray used his connection to the Erie Railroad to provide fugitive slaves free tickets for the train so they could escape to Canada. He died in Goshen, New York, November 8, 1885. He was interred in St. James' Cemetery.".
