- Q19881035 abstract "Calvin A. Johnson Jr. (born November 21, 1985) is a saxophonist, composer and bandleader born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. Deeply rooted in music from both sides of his family tree, Johnson began his approach to the music at the age of 7 when he was given his first saxophone. By the time Johnson was 12, he played his first professional gig at Tipitina's Night Club with the New Orleans Jazz Babyz which was a youth all-star band led by Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews and Omari Neville. In New Orleans, Johnson studied under his longtime mentor, Edward Kidd Jordan at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation’s School of Music and the Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp. Johnson is currently a faculty member of the Louis Armstrong Jazz Camp. Johnson is a graduate of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) under the direction of the late Clyde Kerr Jr. After graduating from NOCCA, Johnson enrolled at Dillard University and the University of New Orleans, where he obtained his undergraduate degree in finance. Johnson launched his debut album “Jewels Lullaby” in 2012 via Alma Records. One year later, Johnson released the “Native Son” album, a ThreadHead Production. Besides his own records, Johnson can be heard on the following albums / artist: Big Sam’s Funky Nation (Peace, Love, and Understanding); Irvin Mayfield's (Strange Fruit), and Courtney Bryan (This Little Light of Mine).Johnson has toured with musicians such as: Harry Connick Jr., Aaron Neville, Irvin Mayfield, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Bob French (jazz musician)|Bob French and the Original Tuxedo Jazz Band. Johnson has performed and recorded with hip hop producer Mannie Fresh and rapper Mystikal. He has played many venues and festivals such as: Jazz at Lincoln Center, the White House, Kodak Theatre, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (as a band leader and sideman), the French Quarter Festival, Satchmo Fest and the Voodoo Music Festival, to name a few. Johnson’s film and acting career began with appearances on the HBO Series Treme (TV series) in 2012; as well as director Dan Pritzker's, “Bolden!” where Johnson plays the role of “Frank Lewis”.
