In 1837 he received his doctorate with a dissertation-thesis on arterial bruits. From 1844 he was associated with Bureau Central des Hôpitaux in Paris, then in 1848 began work as a physician at the Hôpital Saint-Antoine.In 1852 he became a member of the Conseil d'hygiène publique et de salubrité for the département of Seine, serving as its vice-president in 1860. He was a co-founder of the Société de médecine légale, and in 1861 was elected as a member to the Académie de médecine.".
