But after Russians captured the province after the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878) the tribe escaped to Iran. After the province was returned to Turkey following the First World War, the tribe returned. In 1994 the settlement was declared a seat of township. The town economy depends on agriculture. The climete is milder than most other Eastern Anatolian towns and a variety of crops are harvested including cotton. Another renevue of the town is livestock trading.".
