He was elected a Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Downton in 1571, St. Albans in 1572, and Hertfordshire in 1584, 1586 and 1593. He was knighted in 1577. He served as a deputy lieutenant for the county from 1575.He married Ursula, the daughter and coheiress of James Bury of Hampton Poyle, Oxfordshire and had one son, who predeceased him, and 2 daughters.".
