He was elected to the Wisconsin State Senate in 1869, and in 1871 was elected the 11th Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin under Governor Cadwallader Washburn. Shortly after taking office in 1872, however, his health began to fail, and he died in the spring of 1873.".
