- Q140429 abstract "Qatar competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, from 27 July to 12 August 2012. This was the nation's eighth appearance at the Olympics.Following the 2008 Summer Olympics, Qatar, along with Saudi Arabia and Brunei, was one of only three countries never have sent a female athlete to the Olympic Games. In 2010, however, the Qatar Olympic Committee announced that it "hoped to send up to four female athletes in shooting and fencing" to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. In early 2012, it was reported that Qatari female swimmer Nada Arkaji and sprinter Noor Al-Malki had each received a wildcard invitation from the International Olympic Committee to compete at the Olympics. Qatar later announced, it would be including four female competitors in its delegation: Nada Arkaji, Noor Al-Malki, Bahiya Al-Hamad in rifle shooting; and Aya Majdi in table tennis. Bahiya Al-Hamad set the nation's historic record as the first Qatari female flag bearer at the opening ceremony. This was Qatar's most successful Olympics after 12 years, winning a total of two Olympic medals. Skeet shooter Nasser Al-Attiyah, and high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim both claimed bronze medals for the first time in their respective sporting events.".
