A professor of history at California State University Long Beach during the period 1993 to 1996, she was also the founder of the US-based international organization, Chinese Society for Women's Studies. Her 2006 book, Holding Up More Than Half the Sky, Chinese Women Garment Workers in New York City, 1948-92, is considered to be a pioneering study. Bao died of breast cancer in 2006.
