- Richard_Lewisohn abstract "Richard Lewisohn (July 12, 1875 - August 11, 1961) was a German-American surgeon. At Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, he developed procedures that made blood transfusion practical.Lewisohn received his doctorate at the University of Freiburg in 1899 with a thesis on malignant kidney tumors. In 1906 he emigrated to the USA, where he became a gastroenterologist and surgeon; in 1928 he was an attending surgeon at Mount Sinai, and in 1937 he officially retired and became a consulting surgeon. Later in life, he focused on cancer research and, in 1954, founded a cell research laboratory at Mount Sinai.Belgian physician Albert Hustin showed in 1914 that treating transfusions with sodium citrate could prevent clotting, but was toxic to the recipient. Lewisohn in 1915 determined the optimal concentration of sodium citrate for this purpose. This made it possible to preserve blood products for longer and longer periods of time; by 1916, for two weeks. In 1922, with A.A. Berg, he performed the first partial gastrectomy in the United States, by the removal of gastric carcinomas. He had traveled previously to Austria, where the method was already been applied and where he became familiar with the surgical techniques. Following the successful application at Mount Sinai, the technique spread to the rest of the United States. In 1955 he received the Karl Landsteiner Memorial Award. In 1959 he became an honorary member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the American College of Surgeons.".
