- Raleigh_Grifter abstract "The Raleigh Grifter was a children's bicycle manufactured and marketed from 1976 and until early 1983 by the Raleigh Bicycle Company of Nottingham, England. It was the \"must have\" bicycle for the younger rider alongside the ageing but still popular Chopper, which had more scope in its riding position for the older and taller rider. It was the largest of three models of the same ilk, the smallest in the range was the Raleigh Boxer with the Raleigh Strika in the middle. The Grifter was not a BMX bicycle but was loosely based on the same style of early American ones, and was closer in its design to the Californian \"clunkers\" which were homemade examples of what would later be called Mountain Bikes, albeit on a smaller scale for the younger rider. The Grifter had the faux motorcycle twist grip control for its 3 speed Sturmey Archer geared rear hub, complete with a clunker/BMX style handlebar and thick padded saddle with wide chunky tyres. The handlebar had a pad across its crossbar and a frame which looked like an upside down Chopper. With hindsight, the bike was a strange mixture of BMX and Clunker styles, but looked the part and sold well until the BMX scene finally exploded in the UK in 1982, rendering the Grifter and Chopper obsolete at a stroke. There is a strong following with enthusiast groups.".
