- Martin_Hannah abstract "Martin Hannah (28 February 1865 – 27 March 1953) was an Australian politician.Born in Whroo, Victoria, to miner James Smith Hannah and Elizabeth Irving, both Scottish-born, he attended country schools before becoming an alluvial miner and timber worker at Murchison. He then worked as a bricklayer in Melbourne before the land crash sent him to Western Australia, where he organised an unemployment conference. After returning to Victoria he was the first president of the Political Labor Council. Around 1886 he married Elizabeth Ann May, with whom he had four children; later, around 1921, he remarried Jane Elizabeth Satchell. In 1902 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Railway Officers; he resigned in 1906 but returned to the Assembly in 1908 as the member for Collingwood. In 1910 he was expelled from the Labor Party for being a member of the Commonwealth Protectionist League, but he was later readmitted and became a minister without portfolio in 1913. In 1920 he lost his endorsement and was expelled from the party after winning the seat as an Independent Labor candidate. Hannah was defeated in 1921. He died at Parkville in 1953.".
