She was National Casting Champion from 1943-1960 in distance casting against an all-male competition; she made a record cast of 161 feet. After she married Lee Wulff they started the Wulff School of Fly Fishing together and it has been running ever since 1979. The two also started Royal Wulff Products which specializes in selling and making rods, tackle, and lines, along with inventing new products. She was inducted into the International Game Fish Association Hall of Fame in 2007. Joan is currently on the advisory staff of the Winston Rod Company".
