It has been wrongly reported that it was \"hot copper\" wires during the internet boom and then \"hot copper\" Cu during the Cudeco copper boom of 2007.HotCopper first came to prominence in 1997 when an oil discovery in Manila was reported in a post on HotCopper generating 45,000 hits. The post on HotCopper caused the stock to run. The company reported to the ASX, after a price query, that the price movement was due to the HotCopper post.In 1999 Tony Cunningham and D J Carmichael raised seed capital in HotCopper with a view to floating it in the \"Dot Com\" boom. In early 1999, the site was incorporated into HotCopper Australia Limited and floated on the ASX later that year on 22 December, ASX code HOT. It is believed it is the shortest ever listing (non suspended/administration) on the ASX when it was announced it was under take-over by Bourse Data Limited on the 12th of January 2000. Bourse Data Limited was later taken over by St George Bank Limited after it changed its name to Wealthpoint Limited. As part of a cost cutting exercise, St George Bank sold the site in November 2001. The site was purchased by the Financial Arena Limited www.thefinancialarena.com.au and was off the air until 22 April 2002 while the site was converted from the expensive to run JAVA to the much cheaper ASP. The site was then turned on again and has been operational since that date. The original database from 1995 to 2002 is still believed to be available in an oracle format.In January 2004, Tony Cunningham, was contacted to see if he could finance the purchase of HotCopper from The Financial Arena Limited. The Financial Arena Limited, which managed a number of other sites, was keen to clear debt to a former employee. The funds were raised and HotCopper was sold to Report Card Pty Ltd on the 29th of March 2004 with all conditions of the sale being satisfied on 12 March 2005. Report Card Pty Ltd very quickly returned the site to profitability and in July 2014 released the new PHP version of the forum software.Greg D'Arcy is the Managing Director of HotCopper and in an article from the Sydney Morning Herald from September 8, 2012 he confirmed that the site had 170,000 members and received 6,000 posts a day.HotCopper is often quoted as a source of information Nuclear power in Japan, written up in books on trading and in numerous market related economic and social studies".
