He came under criticism for his writings and advocacy from some conservative groups including religious right groups and the John Birch Society who attacked Lyon and \"Humanistic Education\" as being \"anti-Christian\" in their newsletter which resulted in a number of Congressional inquiries to the then U.S. Secretary of Education, Ted Bell, who defended Lyon.
