It was the most easterly of a row of 18th-century houses built between Palace Gate and Knightsbridge. The house was decorated by the leading architect Robert Adam.Gore House had a 3-acre (1.2 ha) estate. Between 1808 and 1821, Gore House was the residence of William Wilberforce, associated with the campaign for the abolition of the slave trade. It was occupied by the Countess of Blessington and the Count D'Orsay from 1836 to 1849.
