In 1904, he was made head of the Department of Hydraulics and Sanitary Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Wisconsin. In the early 1900s, he established the consulting firm Mead and Seastone, forerunner to the Madison engineering firm of Mead & Hunt. Mead became president of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1936, which recognizes him in the annual Daniel W. Mead essay contest. He designed hydroelectric plants.
