Though not a professional league, both teams were affiliated with NHL teams (The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Winnipeg Jets respectively). Previously the province has also hosted a QMJHL team (though again not a professional league) the St. John's Fog Devils. The Maple Leafs were relocated to Toronto to become the Toronto Marlies. The Fog Devils folded in 2008 due to massive financial loses. The IceCaps' long-term future in the province is in jeopardy, however, as jets owners have made it public they are considering moving the team to Thunder Bay, citing travel difficulties to due the province's remote geographical location.".
