- August_1841_vote_of_no_confidence_against_the_government_of_the_Viscount_Melbourne abstract "The August 1841 vote of no confidence against the government of the Viscount Melbourne occurred in August 1841.William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1835. On 4 June 1841, his government was defeated in the House of Commons on a vote of no confidence. On the advice of Melbourne, Queen Victoria dissolved the Parliament on 23 June. The Whig Party lost around 70 seats in the following general election. The Queen opened the new Parliament on 24 Ausgust. On the same day, Conservative MP John Stuart-Wortley proposed in the House of Commons an amendment to the House's address in answer to the Queen's speech, which claimed that the government no longer possessed the confidence of the Parliament. The Earl of Ripon, the former Prime Minister, proposed a same amendment in the House of Lords. After 4 days of debate, the House of Commons voted on 27 August on the question whether the proposed amendment should be left out of the address. The question was vetoed by a vote of 269 to 360 and Wortley's amendment was added to the address. This was the second time for Melbourne's government to lose a vote of confidence in the same year. He resigned on 30 August, and the Queen appointed Sir Robert Peel, Bt as prime minister.".
