- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "A tank in a typical fantasy MUD is the character who, alone or in a group, is always the first to attack a monster. A mob will direct its attacks at the first person that hits it, so in a group the tank is generally some character with enough hit points to withstand this punishment. Meanwhile the others hack safely away at the adversary — at least until the tank is killed and somebody else becomes the lucky target. Some MUDs now have monsters that can switch their attacks to other characters in the group, so the tank approach doesn't work as well with them.".
- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "Another nice feature in Lost Souls is that it has a tutorial sister MUD called Lost Dawning [...] that's geared toward people who are new at mudding and new to the Internet in general.".
- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "By now you must have figured out that someone has to write and watch over MUDs. Sometimes these powerful beings swirling over your head are the coders/immortals/wizards who have put many hundreds of hours into making sure you have fun. At other times, these gods are those dedicated players who have managed to live through everything the MUD had to throw at them and have achieved the ultimate goal of immorting a character. [...] They're the people putting in their time to add new areas and monsters to the realm [...] The day may come when you find yourself in that big comfy chair in the sky. On most MUDs, when you get past a certain level your character becomes immortal. [...] Some MUDs have levels that the immortals to continue to vie for, and others have a remort option for those that find godhood isn't all that it's cracked up to be.".
- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "Empire [...] [icon indicating 4 out of 4 rating] This little-known gem is one of the best MUDs out there. Those who enjoy roleplaying will appreciate the mysterious atmosphere that surrounds Empire's characters. Rather than have your name, level and class flapping in the breeze for everyone to see, on this MUD other players have only a vivid description of your choosing until you decide to introduce yourself by name. [...] And as the title screen of Empire will tell you, this MUD is not for the first-time player. It's not easy to succeed at this game, but it is quite rewarding when you do. [...] The diku code for this MUD is highly modified, and it seems like new things are being added every day. Empire features a player-run newspaper, several very large cities on two major continents, many wonderfully exciting zones for every level, and a working economy that changes as adventurers bring new gold into the cities. [...] Pkilling is allowed here, which, coupled with the custom descriptions instead of names, gives you a delicious suspicion of anyone you don't personally know. Sometimes the tension is so thick on the streets you could cut it with a knife. This is far from being an exclusively pkilling game, but it's got just the right touch of that perilous excitement. ¶ If at first you don't succeed on Empire, try, try again — and again. It's worth it! Your sweating palms and racing heart will thank you.".
- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "Even during the most terrible morning hours when we should all be asleep, like around 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., Medievia has over 100 sickos awake and typing away. [...] Medievia also has dragons that you can fly around on, making those long trips to your favorite areas go by really quickly.".
- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "Genocide is a breakneck-paced, brutal MUD that has none of the mobs or quests you might be used to. It's a bloody world of kill-or-be-killed where you battle your fellow players in a savage race to the finish. There are several different kinds of fast and furious wars that restart all the time, so you don't have to worry about jumping into the game too late. [...] If you're trying out Genocide for the first time, you'll be glad that everyone starts out on equal ground. [...] The only advantage the veterans have is experience and the knowledge of where to find the good stuff fast. [...] If you have a weak heart or are the kind of mudder who takes pkills against you very personally, you might want to steer clear of this bad boy. On the other hand, if you get sick of trashing beastly fidos and spending dull hours racking up experience points, try out Genocide's nonstop action.".

- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "Have you ever come upon a place on the Net that's so incredible that you can't believe such entertainment is free? This MUD will blow your mind with its marvelous attention to detail and incredible role-playing atmosphere! There's so much to learn here that even the experienced mudder will have to spend some time before really getting the hang of it. That's not to say that the commands are difficult to pick up, it's just that there are so many minute and exciting things available that you could spend an entire mudding career at this site!".
- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "Here it is — the big one! Sojourn is gone but not forgotten, and Toril is the new king. [...] Still based on TSR's Forgotten Realms world, Toril has kept Waterdeep, Bloodstone, and all its other great areas [...] Toril has over 300 players at peak hours, and closer to 100 at times when you wouldn't expected to see more than five players on another MUD. [...] There's no doubt that Sojourn is alive and well, and living in Toril.".
- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "LPmuds: When you play LPmuds, you'll probably be faced with more of a bent toward socialization and an attempt to get characters to role-play more. Quests, where you have to complete a predetermined set of actions, tend to be used to try to move people away from relying simply on combat to gain experience. When you first enter the game, your character has no profession until you join a guild, which you usually need to search around for. It is normally against the rules for seasoned characters to help you with your quests or finding a guild, but some LPmuds do not enforce this.".
- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "LegendMUD allows you to adventure through several ancient lands and historical eras to experience the world as the people of the past viewed it. This is travel through history the way it was meant to be! You can choose from several great time periods like Celtic Ireland, medieval Germany, and even an Arabian nights setting. Your hometown will affect your stats and determine what your character can learn based on the beliefs of the population at the time. Those of a more ancient period are more adept at magic, while abilities in a later industrial era will lean toward technology. ¶ Don't worry about being stuck exclusively in the time period you've chosen — no doubt you'll want to explore all areas of this great MUD. Luckily, it allows time travel between eras so you won't miss a thing! The skills available for your character are numerous and original, and the combat is fast and exhilarating. If you get stuck on something, there's a universal chat channel you can use to ask for help from the midsized player base. You usually end up getting the helpfiles recited back to you, but the players are certainly not a rude bunch. Also, make sure you rent instead of typing quit or you'll drop all your stuff. Equipment is level restrictive, so don't expect to be hanging on to very fancy weapons at the first level. ¶ It would be really great if more coders took the immense time and effort to study cultures of the past and put them into virtual worlds like this one. LegendMUD seems to be doing well and is becoming more popular all the time. There's no doubt we'll soon see more time periods. And there's an added benefit with this game — you can always justify the time you waste mudding by telling yourself and others that it's educational.".
- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "MudOS and Amylaar:: There are a couple versions of LPmuds that you might run into. More are being developed as coders and wizards improve their games. Both MudOS and Amylaar are descendants of LPmuds, and Amylaar is an especially popular version.".
- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "Once upon a time, boys and girls, there was a gargantuan MUD named Sojourn. It had over 400 players at peak times, and some of the most highly modified code in the land. Following faithfully in the wake of TSR's Forgotten Realms , the MUD enjoyed an enormous wealth of areas, characters, and ideas from that role-playing game. But gods are vain and so are coders. Having different opinions on the future direction of Sojourn, they took the code and went their separate ways. The world was split into two main offshoots: Duris and Toril.".

- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "Tanks: Leading the ChargeNo, we're not talking about those huge army vehicles. Well, yeah, some MUDs do have that kind of tank in them, but that's not what we're referring to. A tank in a typical fantasy MUD is the character who, alone or in a group, is always the first to attack a monster. A mob will direct its attacks at the first person that hits it, so in a group the tank is generally some character with enough hit points to withstand this punishment. Meanwhile the others hack safely away at the adversary — at least until the tank is killed and somebody else becomes the lucky target. Some MUDs now have monsters that can switch their attacks to other characters in the group, so the tank approach doesn't work as well with them. If you're a newbie and are asked to join a group, it's important that you understand this concept. Listen to the leader and only attack after she says, or you may end up tanking something that will toast your hide in seconds.".
- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "The MUD Connector at http://www.mudconnect.com has just about everything you could possibly need to get on a MUD. It has MUD-related links to FAQs, newsgroups and clients; as well as player discussions and forums about different MUDs. This site also has a listing of over 500 MUDs, with pretty useful descriptions of what you can expect to find on most games. You can even click on the MUD or home page you'd like to see and link right to it. If you're shopping for a new MUD and aren't sure what you're looking for, this is the place to park it. We're talking big time bookmark material here.".
- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "The combat in this world is richly developed with a limb-based type of action. Your extremities will actually have their own damage points, rather than having your whole score gathered up into one big chunk of meat. Also, each race has its own language and a limited ability to speak to others.".
- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "Use the consider command around town and find out what you can handle, or find somebody nice and ask him where the best place for newbies is. [...] Once you've set your prompt and wimpy , find a suitable target for your first planned act of aggression. Check it with consider, and then make sure your fingers are ready to quickly type the word flee.".
- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "When you first log on, you're asked to create what is called an atman. Some other MUDs of this type allow you only one character at a time on the entire game, but you're allowed to have five characters on Lost Souls.".
- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "[...] someone has to write and watch over MUDs. Sometimes these [...] are the coders/immortals/wizards [...]".
- books?vid=ISBN0-7645-7003-X quote "[pp. 157] To Rent or Quit: That is the Question [...] Some MUDs will allow you to simply type quit to log off. That's it. Will you have your stuff when you come back? That depends on the MUD. On some you'll keep your stuff, on others you'll only return with part of it, and on some really painful ones you won't come back with anything. Other MUDs may require that you rent at an inn. This will usually allow you to keep your stuff, but if you're a long way from the nearest hotel you could be in trouble. Some rent is free and some will cost you a certain amount of money per item. This can be a pain, but sometimes it's your only choice when you think the MUD is worth it and you want to keep your stuff. [pp. 163] Also, make sure you rent instead of typing quit or you'll drop all your stuff.".
