- Me_&_Rubyfruit abstract "Me and Rubyfruit is a short 1989/1990 videorecording by Sadie Benning, filmed with PixelVision camera in black and white. The title, and some of the content, alludes to Rubyfruit Jungle, a novel by Rita Mae Brown that has explicitly lesbian themes. The video contains a narrative, focused on a young girl as she explores her sexuality, and attempts to reconcile her homoerotic desires with her wishes to assimilate into her culture and fit into social roles. A story is told in the style of a video-diary, though it is of questionable literal autobiographical legitimacy. The narrative is of her interactions with another young girl and interactions with, it is implied, a young boy. There are intersecting close-up shots of her eye while she speaks, and shots of written text, panning from left to right, so that at each moment, the viewer will read only what is currently visible on the paper. The dialogue that exists between the spoken words that accompany the eye close-up and the written quotations is a conversation that is talking about whether or not sapphic attraction is acceptable, and depending on the answer to this, what the future holds for the two figures. This story can be seen as an interpretation of the novel to which the title alludes, a dialogue between herself and another young lover (with the written word and the spoken one not fixed to either her or the lover), or it can be interpreted as an internal conversation between two parts of Sadie herself – one that is more rational and traditional, and one that is more rebellious and relies on their thoughts (in this case, the written words represents the more conservative side, and the spoken, the person that Sadie wishes she could fully become). As in other Sadie Benning videos, such as Girl Power, the video itself is often out of focus, grainy, fuzzy, and filmed in black and white. There is frequent static, and the background music features heteronormative love songs. Additionally, there are panning shots of sexualized photos of heterosexual couples and muscular men, and phone sex ads.".
