- Warren_Wells abstract "Warren Wells (born November 14, 1942 in Franklin, Louisiana) is a former American college and Professional Football player, who played wide receiver for five seasons, one for the NFL's Detroit Lions (1964) and, after spending two years in the U.S. Army (rare for NFL players), four for the American Football League's and American Football Conference's Oakland Raiders. Wells is listed by the Pro Football Hall of Fame, in Canton, Ohio, as one of 29 NFL players who served in the military during the Vietnam War. The HOF recognition of Wells can be seen at the Pro Football Hall of Fame website..On June 26, 2013, Wells was inducted into the Hebert High School Alumni Hall of Fame. He received accolades for his outstanding performance in professional football, and for community service. Wells inspired two professionals and a professor to establish a yearly "Standing in the Gap Festival" to promote inter-generational communication between young and elder professional athletes in the Golden Triangle area in Texas. This event was held on July 5, 2014 at 2728 Goliad, a day after the birth-date of the great Al Davis, who advocated the recruiting of athletes from Historically Black Colleges and Universities such as Texas Southern University. The festival is held on the grounds of the former homestead site of the Warren Wells family. Wells was honored by Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association on July 18, 2015. An article on www.pvilca.org quoting Ken Houston, an NFL Hall of Famer, states "Warren was the original 'Dr. Doom.' He was cold-blooded." Wells is recognized as one of the notable alumni of Texas Southern University, in Houston, Texas. He and about 65 other NFL players who attended the historical university are to be honored at the 2015 Homecoming, October 23-24. He is tagged "the greatest deep threat" for he maintained a yard/reception average greater than 20.5 for four consecutive years as an Oakland Raider wide receiver. His consistency in attaining a yard/reception average equal to or greater than 20.5 exceeds the performance of other Raider wide receivers such as Cliff Branch. He is identified as a prodigy in football because of his intensity and integrity on the playing field. His speed, agility and acumen made him a key player in the last few seconds of games under John Madden. One victory on December 6, 1970 upset the New York Jets at Shea Stadium, with the final score of 14-13. An ESPN website quote says: "Warren Wells: John Madden calls him one of the greatest players he coached. In 1969, Wells averaged 26.8 yards per catch with 14 touchdowns on only 42 catches."Wells' professional football career was robust and intense for his statistics indicate his ability to accomplish phenomenal numbers in a shorter timespan than others such as Jerry Rice and Tim Brown. The truncation of NFL data in certain categories is the only reason his 26.8 yard/reception average is not dominant in NFL records. Mathematically speaking, his average in 1969 is a measure of superior performance and athleticism that is deserving of honor and recognition. Somewhat like Tim Brown, Wells' beliefs spurred him to excellence in his professional career. His redemption and restoration are shared in one scripture among his favorites: Corinthians 9:24 Do you not know that all the runners in a stadium compete, but only one receives the prize? So run to win. His journey has inspired the writing of more than 1081 articles by a Raider Nation Times writer. He was also among a group of volunteer senior advisors for more than 810 articles published by a Bleacher Report writer from 2009 to 2011.".
