Hartmann.Hartmann is a brand with a heritage of fine craftsmanship. Joseph Hartmann’s vision of creating “luggage so fine it will stand as a symbol of excellence” resulted in the brand becoming a favorite among the affluent travelers. Today the luggage has been featured in many films and is e.g. the luggage of choice for Mad Men’s, Don Draper. The brand has American roots but since 2014 several new collections are produced in Europe. The classic elements of Hartmann combined with innovative production techniques made it possible to create luxury cases with lightweight. History The founder Joseph Hartmann was born in 1847 in Breskowitz and moved from Austria to New York at age 21. The first six years of Joseph Hartmann's life in America are years of poverty and struggle in New York City. Living in a tenement, Hartmann works at a succession of unrewarding jobs as a cigar salesman, teacher, and restaurant owner. His wife, Lorie, eventually sells the restaurant and encourages Joseph to move to Wisconsin and start over again. The Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroad lines are joined in Utah, forming the first transcontinental railroad in North America. The explosion of railroad transportation and travel which continues on through the early twentieth century means there is greater need for quality trunks. In 1877 Joseph Hartmann decides to found the company Hartmann & Co. The company became known with the first Cushion Top Wardrobe trunk in 1923. This was the first trunk which kept coat hangers in place so that the clothes could not wrinkle. These trunks were widely used by celebrities, royalty and wealthy travelers. More than half a million of these cases have been sold throughout the world. Since the 30s, the company offered more than 800 models, sizes and colors of steamer trunks and luggage. In the early 40s Joseph Hartmann was looking for new leather on the market and he has found this in the flywheel belt. Until today this Belting leather is a distinctive feature of the brand. Another iconic material of this brand is the tweed fabric that is for more than 55 years present in the collections. In 1954 author Ian Fleming immortalized Hartmann in his novel, Live and Let Die, with James Bond carrying a Hartmann Skymate suitcase. In 1956, the company opened a manufacturing operation in Tennessee, and the company's headquarters and plant facilities followed in 1959. In the 70s and 80s Hartmann hired designers like Halston, Gloria Vanderbilt and Lambertson Truex to create collections. Hartmann was bought by Brown Forman Corporation before being acquired by Clarion Capital Partners (A Private equity firm ) in 2007. Since 2012 Hartmann is part of the Samsonite group. The Hartmann brand is the top offer of their brand portfolio. The brand was launched in Asia and Europe by the end of 2014, until then the brand was mainly sold in North America and Japan. 2014 was a recent milestone for the company by launching the 7R collection that brings an innovative styling together with more functionality due to new production processes. They won a Rod Dot Award for this collection. Product AwardsEurope, 2014, Red Dot Award best of the best (Product Design) –for the 7R collection.".
