- Collaborative_Problem_Solving abstract "Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) is the name of an approach to understanding and helping children with behavioral challenges that was described originally by Dr. Ross Greene in his book, The Explosive Child, and subsequently further developed and described for clinical populations in the book Dr. Greene and Dr. Stuart Ablon co-authored entitled, Treating Explosive Kids: The Collaborative Problem Solving Approach while working together at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). The CPS model views behavioral challenges as a form of learning disability or developmental delay. In other words, behaviorally challenging children are lacking crucial cognitive skills, especially in the domains of flexibility, frustration tolerance, and problem-solving. CPS seeks to create fundamental changes in interactions between children with behavioral challenges and their adult caregivers by having caregivers engage children in solving problems collaboratively. The CPS approach has since described in numerous co-authored journal articles and book chapters. A U.S. district court ruled that the trademarks for "Collaborative Problem Solving" and the "Collaborative Problem Solving Approach" belong to the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Greene has not been associated with MGH since 2009 and has since began referring to his work as "Collaborative & Proactive Solutions". Dr. Greene founded the non-profit organization Lives in the Balance to assist in the dissemination of his model through free web-based programming and to advocate on behalf of behaviorally challenging kids and their caregivers. Think:Kids at MGH continues to develop and disseminate the CPS approach and and to teach clinicians, educators and facilities around the world.".
