He was commissioned as a 1st lieutenant with the 54th New York Volunteer Infantry on December 5, 1862. He resigned his commission on March 20, 1863. He was commissioned as a captain in the 2nd United States Colored Cavalry Regiment on February 12, 1864. He saw action at Fort Fisher, North Carolina in early 1865 and received brevets (honorary promotions) up to the rank of brigadier general. He resigned from the Army on January 10, 1866. On November 6, 1867 he was elected to membership in the New York Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.Lawrence was appointed by President Andrew Johnson as Minister Resident to Costa Rica on Oct 2, 1866. He was recalled after Jun 24, 1868.".
