It was discovered by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research project in Socorro, New Mexico, United States, on October 10, 1999. It is named after Treena Joi, a Science & Art educator currently teaching in the Ravenswood School District. The designation was given by the Society for Science and the Public as recognition for acting as a mentor to two competitors in the 2008 Middle School Program. Two of Treena's students at Corte Madera School in Portola Valley, California, Jonathan Zdasiuk and Christopher Sauer, participated and Christopher won the top prize, a $20,000 scholarship.".
