In 1868 he married Catherine Mary Flynn in Melbourne. He established several other country newspapers, but ultimately sold them all to become chairman of the Imperial Banking Company, suffering heavy losses. In 1874 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the member for Kilmore, which was renamed Kilmore and Anglesey in 1877 and Anglesey in 1889. He was defeated in 1892 but re-elected in 1903, transferring to Upper Goulburn in 1904 for his final term, which ended in 1908. Hunt died at Kilmore in 1934.".
