He was appointed High Sheriff of Oxfordshire for 1696 and created a baronet the same year. He served as Storekeeper of the Ordnance from 1717 until his death in 1721. He was buried at Glympton, Oxfordshire as was his wife, Anne Sawbridge (daughter of London bookseller George Sawbridge). He was succeeded by his eldest son Thomas Wheate.".
