He was an editorial assistant at Jonathan Cape from 1937, and served in the Royal Artillery in North Africa and Northwest Europe 1939-45.He was in the BBC Home service 1946-1965, going from producer in 1946 to Chief in 1963. He was then an editor at Hutchinson Publishing from 1963 to 1969.He wrote several books on World War II and commanders e.g. Rommel, Montgomery, Vyvyan Pope, Wavell and Slim (Slim the Standard-Bearer received the WH Smith Literary Award). He wrote two books on Ultra (Europe) and The Other Ultra (Japan).".
