- Q7171982 abstract "Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken took office in January, 2005 after the voters of Lucas County, Ohio elected him to a four-year term. Pete Gerken began his career in public service in 1996, when he was appointed to an At-Large seat on Toledo City Council. As an eight-year member of council, then Councilman Gerken chaired the Environment, Utilities and Public Service Committee and was strongly involved in both Toledo Backs Jeep campaigns.Currently, Commissioner Gerken serves on the Executive Committee of the Lucas County Improvement Corporation and the Board of the University of Toledo Urban Affairs Center. He was instrumental in the creation of a Commissioner’s Citizens Tax Levy Review Committee.Pete Gerken was born in Toledo and grew up in the historic Old West End neighborhood. He attended Central Catholic High School, graduating in 1969. In 1991, he received a BS in Organizational Behavior from the University of Toledo. For 29 years, he worked for Jeep / DaimlerChrysler as a member of the United Auto Workers (UAW). In December, 2004, he retired as Co-Administrator of the UAW DaimlerChrysler Ohio Training Center. In 2015, Pete Gerken eschewed his union and democratic principles by openly supporting ResponsibleOhio and state initiative Issue 3, which, if approved, would enshrine a constitutionally protected business monopoly/structured oligopoly within Ohio's founding document. Moreover, Issue 3 would prohibit Ohio residents from participation in commercially growing and selling a cash crop in Ohio.It is not clear why Mr. Gerken did this, though it runs counter to his past support of economic freedom and open markets, allowing Lucas County residents the ability to compete in all commercial activities, business structures and commercial ventures.".
