- Q662057 abstract "Ostarbeiter (German: for Eastern worker) was a Nazi German designation for slave workers gathered from occupied Central and Eastern Europe to perform forced labor in Germany during World War II in support of the war machine. Deportations of civilians conducted since the beginning of war, reached unprecedented levels following Operation Barbarossa of 1941. The Ostarbeiters were apprehended from the newly formed districts of Reichskommissariat Ukraine, General Government Distrikt Galizien, and Reichskommissariat Ostland which comprised the territories of German occupied Poland, Soviet occupied Poland, and the Soviet Union itself. Ukrainians made up the largest percentage of Ostarbeiters although many Belarusians, Russians, and Tatars were also present. Some estimates put the number of Eastern workers between 3 million and 5.5 million. After World War II the International Military Tribunal estimated the number of liberated Ostarbeiters from the USSR at 2.5 million, and from Poland at almost one million among slave laborers of 14 different nationalities. Most were very young, under the age of 16, as those older than 16 were usually conscripted; 30% were as young as 12–14 years of age when they were taken to Germany. By November 1943 the age limit was dropped to 10. 50% of those taken from Ukraine were girls and women.Ostarbeiter from the Reichskommissariat Ukraine were forced to wear a dark blue and white badge with "OST" written on it, the German word for east in upper-case letters.".
