He became an Inspector in 1969 and Assistant Commissioner of Police in 1978.He was the first Chinese Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police in 1984 and Deputy Commissioner of Police in 1985. He rose to the rank of Commissioner following the retirement of Raymon Anning in 1989.After retiring from the force, Li joins Sir Ka-Shing Li's Cheung Kong (Holdings) and Hutchison Whampoa to advise the firms on security matters; he also acted as a Senior Consultant.During the 1997 handover period, Li became a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.In 1990, Li intervened in the kidnapping incident of Li Ka-shing's son Victor Li, and Walter Kwok, by Cheung Chi Keung.Li's wife, whom he met at secondary school, deceased in Nov. 2007. One of Li's children child, who used to live in Vancouver, Canada but moved back to Hong Kong to keep Li company; the other one is living in London, UK with Li's grandsons (namely Thomas and Joseph).".
