He made his debut for the team during the 1983 and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement after the 1990 championship. During that time he won two Connacht winners' medals and one All-Star award. He ended up as an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion.At club level McStay played with Ballina Stephenites in Mayo and Ballymun Kickhams in Dublin and Roscommon Gaels in Roscommon.In 2001 he led Mayo U21s to Connacht and Hastings cup titles and Mayo also reached the All Ireland final that year losing out narrowly to a star studded Tyrone side. He was the manager of Roscommon Gaels when they won a county title in 2004 and of St. Brigid's of Roscommon in 2013 when they won the All Ireland Club Championship against Ballymun Kickhams.McStay is a regular analyst on The Sunday Game.On 5 October Kevin McStay became joint manager of the Roscommon senior football team alongside Fergal O Donnell".
