A right-hander, he was a pitcher in the Major Leagues for the Philadelphia Athletics (1942, 1946–1951 and 1953), Baltimore Orioles (1954–1955) and Detroit Tigers (1955). The native of Medford, Massachusetts was the father of Joe Coleman, a Major League pitcher for 15 seasons (1965–1979) and a two-time 20-game winner, and the grandfather of Casey Coleman, a pitcher with the Chicago Cubs and Kansas City Royals since 2010.The eldest Coleman missed the 1943–1945 seasons while serving in the United States Navy during World War II.
