He was a partner of the law firm Nørregaard & Bonnevie until his appointment as Supreme Court justice in 1922.He was married to the women's rights campaigner Margarete Bonnevie, who was President of the Norwegian Association for Women's Rights. Thomas Bonnevie also promoted Gustav Vigeland's art and the construction of the sculpture arrangement in Frogner Park. He was the brother of Norway's first female Professor, Kristine Bonnevie and the peace activist and Member of Parliament Carl Bonnevie.In 1947, he published the book Høyesterett og riksråds-forhandlingene.".
