He was educated at Berkhamsted School and during World War I served in the Suffolk Regiment in France. He married Isabel May Griffiths Dane (1893 - 1935), niece of Sir Louis Dane, on 6 June 1917 and in 1918 was accepted into Cambridge University where he specialized in archaeology.He is known for his theory that authoritarian societies produce abstract art while free societies produce realistic art.He was a fellow of Queens' College, Cambridge and a University Lecturer in Classics; he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature (Litt.D.).His wife is buried at the Parish of the Ascension Burial Ground in Cambridge. He died on 28 June 1957, in Cambridge, and was cremated in Cambridge Crematorium (Cambridgeshire) on 1 July 1957. In accordance with his wishes, his ashes were scattered in the Mediterranean Sea near Majorca, Spain.".
