- Q4860342 abstract "For the 1938 film, see Barefoot Boy (film)Barefoot Boy is Larry Coryell's first and only album for the Flying Dutchman label, a company created by Impulse! Records founder Bob Thiele. The album was produced by Thiele, with production assistance from Lillian Seyfert and engineered by Eddie Kramer. Barefoot Boy was recorded at Electric Ladyland in New York, according to the album's liner note with a certain level of spontaneity. The first-cut - a distinctive version of "Gypsy Queen", the well-covered Gábor Szabó tune made famous by Santana on the album Abraxas - featured Coryell and saxophonist Steve Marcus soloing over a propulsive rhythm put down by Roy Haynes and percussionists Lawrence Killian and Harry Wilkinson. Using heavy distortion throughout, Coryell's playing was at its most rock on the track. Based on a boogaloo beat, and with bassist Mervin Bronson added to the line-up, his playing on the filming "The Great Escape" was bluesier and less extreme. The album's third and final track, the side-long modal tour-de-force "Call to the Higher Consciousness", showed Coryell playing in a traditional jazz style, with an opening sax solo by Steve Marcus, sensitive drum work from Roy Haynes and the group augmented by pianist Mike Mandel.".
