He won the U.S. Junior Closed Championship in 2000.In 2001, Perelsteyn was awarded the Samford Chess Fellowship by the US Chess Trust. After taking two years off from school to play chess professionally, Perelshteyn returned to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and graduated in 2004.He was also the winner of the tournament "The Spice Cup" in 2007. His peak FIDE rating is 2555 (achieved in July 2008), and his current rating is 2515. Among active chess players in the United States, Perelsteyn is currently ranked 34th.In the Spice Cup 2009, Perelshteyn tied for first in the B group with 6 points.
