In 1979 it first state to conduct a post-Furman involuntary execution. The only person to have been executed before then during the post-Furman period was Gary Gilmore, held in Utah, who volunteered to be executed in 1977. His death effectively ended the national moratorium on the death penalty executions that had been in effect since 1967.Since Furman, the State of Florida has executed 92 convicted murderers, all at Florida State Prison, which possesses the state's sole remaining death chamber. As of January 17, 2016, 389 inmates are awaiting execution. Forty have appeals pending. In its decision in Hurst v. Florida (2016), the United States Supreme Court struck down part of Florida's death penalty law as unconstitutional. A new law is required.".
