- Q22958879 abstract "José Maria Cruxent (January 16, 1911 – February 23, 2005) was considered to be the "Father of Scientific Archeology" in Venezuela. He was born in Spain January 16, 1911 in Catalonia. Not much is known about his early life. He was a student at the University of Barcelona in archeology, but in 1939 the Spanish Civil War cut short his academic career. After the war, he ventured to Venezuela where he eventually gained notoriety for reshaping archeology in South America by following the scientific method in field work. Responsible for the discovery of Ciudad de Nueva Cádiz, and Taima-Taima, he greatly influenced the determination of a modern human presence in South America. It was at Taima-Taima that he discovered El Jobo projectile points and other paleolithic tools dating to as early as 13,000 B.P.; a major discovery in the Human Migration pattern. Cruxent was later asked to excavate La Isabella, the first Spanish settlement, as well as the tomb of Christopher Columbus in the Catedral de Santo Domingo. Cruxent eventually became the head curator and archeologist for the Museo de Ciencias Naturales and founded the Archeology department at Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Científicas. In the latter portion of his life, José Cruxent became an artist in the abstract expressionism movement. His paintings often depicted his archeological discoveries and were reminiscent of cave drawings. He did not stick to one medium, but rather experimented with many textures. He continued to work as a professor and artist until his death in 2005 at the age of 94.".
