He moved to Georgia in 1835 with his parents, who settled in Twiggs County. He engaged in mercantile and agricultural pursuits. He was also a missionary. Upon the readmission of the State of Georgia to representation he was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth Congress and served from June 25, 1868, to March 3, 1869. He presented credentials as a Member-elect to the Forty-first Congress, but was not permitted to qualify. He was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1877 and was a traveling missionary from 1879 until his death in St. Augustine, Florida, December 3, 1900. He was interred in Rose Hill Cemetery, Macon, Georgia.".
