- Q2184615 abstract "Symphonic Cinema is a concert format with classical music and live edited film. Film director Lucas van Woerkum introduced Symphonic Cinema to the public in 2010 at the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam. Sitting in the orchestra, equipped with an iPad with customized software, Lucas synchronized the film to the music. Symphonic Cinema evolved into a new concert format. Orchestras that want to reach out to a new public are programming Symphonic Cinema films. Commissioned by Residentie Orchestra and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, two films were produced in 2011; Scale and The Isle of the Dead. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam presented The Isle of the Dead in a special exposition accompanied by 2 pianos. In 2012, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra asked for a 3 year educational project with Symphonic Cinema. Children were introduced to Gustav Mahler, Maurice Ravel and Igor Stravinsky by film scenes that tell the story of the music. After the success of this project, a new Symphonic Cinema film based on Stravinsky’s The Firebird started. This resulted in a commission by 7 international partner orchestras to produce the first one-hour Symphonic Cinema film, that will have its international tour in season 2014-2015.".
