Playfair was a Sydney City Councillor from 1875 to 1893, serving as mayor in 1885. In 1889 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as a Free Trade member for West Sydney, serving until his defeat in 1891. He died in Sydney in 1893.".
