- Q19185 abstract "Template:ForGeorge Bernard Shaw (26 July 1856 – 2 November 1950), known at his insistence simply as Bernard Shaw, was an Irish playwright, critic and controversialist whose influence on Western theatre, culture and politics extended from the 1880s to his death in 1950 and beyond. His more than sixty plays include major works such as Man and Superman (1902), Pygmalion (1912) and Saint Joan (1923). With a range incorporating both contemporary satire and historical allegory, Shaw became the leading dramatist of his generation, and in 1925 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.Born in Dublin, Shaw moved to London in 1876 and struggled for some years to establish himself as a writer, while undergoing a rigorous process of self-education. By 1883 he had discovered socialism, and after briefly flirting with Marxism embraced the Fabian Society and its gradualist formulae for social change, becoming the society's most prominent publicist. Alongside his political activities he became a respected theatre and music critic and began to write plays, although it was not until the turn of the 19th–20th century that he became successful as a dramatist. Influenced by Henrik Ibsen, he sought to introduce a new realism into English-language drama, using his plays as vehicles to disseminate his political, social and religious ideas. Having achieved recognition, his stances on public issues were often contentious: he promoted eugenics, denounced both sides in the First World War as equally culpable, and praised Mussolini's 1922 seizure of power in Italy. In old age Shaw renounced Fabian caution and increasingly spoke of dictatorship as a more practical method of securing social change. After visiting the Soviet Union in 1931 he formed an admiration for Joseph Stalin that never wavered; he also favoured aspects of Nazism. He continued to write plays and provided the screenplay for a filmed version of Pygmalion for which he received an Academy Award. Shaw accepted no state honours; he was offered, but refused, the Order of Merit in 1946. In the final decade of his life during and after the Second World War he made fewer public statements, but he continued to write prolifically until shortly before his death, aged ninety-four.".
